My Moment of Yes
In the past I’ve shared how I went from working in corporate education to blogging full-time. Losing my job was the catalyst that prompted many changes; including when Paul and I eloped in Las Vegas, and starting my own business. We wanted to be PROACTIVE about the events that affect our life, because up until then we were simply reacting. You can trust me when I say you don’t want to be stuck in that rut!
The part of our story I want to share is our decision to move cross-country from Arizona to Ohio. On a complete whim! It really started with the car accident we were in on July 4th, 2016. Paul and I were on our way to a family barbecue when someone ran a red light, pulling directly in our path. We were going almost 40 miles an hour and the impact totaled our truck. It also broke my sternum which resulted in months of painful recovery.
We thought things were leveling out for us, until three days before Thanksgiving. Our landlord was selling the house when our lease was up January 31st. We needed to find a new place to live and fast! The holidays are not the ideal time to search for a rental, we found out the hard way. Did I also mention this was the first holiday season with my son away from home in the Army? Needless to say it was a very emotional time.
We decided to downsize into a one bedroom apartment, but it was halfway into January and we still hadn’t signed a new lease. Something was really holding me back. It just didn’t feel like we were making a proactive move forward!

Then one night Paul was chatting with an old buddy from the Marine Corp. His friend lived in California and we joked we were going to move there and just crash on his couch. Maybe spend a few months being beach bums. It’s fun to daydream, right?!
The thing is though, his buddy is from Columbus, Ohio and he was moving back in the spring! While the guys talked I jumped on my phone and looked up Columbus. It took me about two minutes to immediately fall in love with the city. I knew in my heart of hearts this place was exactly where we needed to be. It was one of those moments, a ‘Moment of Yes’!
I interrupted their conversation long enough to tell my husband we were moving soon. We started out day dreaming, except the more we looked at the city, the more it felt right. This was our ‘Moment of Yes’! Three hours later we called our family and friends with the news. After that Paul lined up a job interview in Columbus, I booked an extended stay hotel for a month, and we sold 90% of our belongings. Three weeks later we hit the road, heading for a city we never been to before. I have always said I can blog from anywhere and it was time to test out that theory!
Fast forward eight months and we are still living in the pet-friendly extended stay hotel where we first landed. The idea was to learn the city before finding a place, but I really think an RV might be our next ‘Moment of Yes’! We both have found a renewed confidence and are managing life’s bumps with a better sense of balance now. It has been wonderful for us individually, and really forced us to grow together as a couple.
Now that I have chatted your ears off with my story, we would really like to know yours! What pivotal experience changed your life? Big or small!
