The next time you stumble across sweet, juicy blood oranges at the farmers market be sure to make a seasonal Blood Orange Old Fashioned cocktail that’s perfect for sipping on a spring afternoon! –Jump to Recipe
The Old Fashioned is one of the most widely respected classic cocktails. The simple combination of sugar, whiskey, and bitters is sweet without being too sweet. Plus it’s strong enough to really kick things up a few notches! Personally I love how easy it is to adapt the traditional Old Fashioned recipe below with seasonal flavors like blood orange.
Seasonal Blood Orange Old Fashioned
Blood oranges are typically in season from December to May with some variations depending the variety. This vibrant citrus fruit is packed with health benefits. A big bonus when you are sipping on a cocktail! You want to select fruit that is firm and feels heavy as opposed to a softer fruit. When you juice your blood oranges I highly recommend you take the extra step to strain out the pulp for a smoother drink. Simply line a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth and strain the juice.
If you’ve never experience an Old Fashioned then I highly suggest you try the classic recipe below. Then if creating craft cocktails with seasonal ingredients is your thing, grab the recipe for my seasonal Blood Orange Old Fashioned over on the SoFabFood site along with a few helpful tips!
