Pull your significant other out of the a romantic rut you two have been wandering through recently. These five Healthier Date Night Ideas are simple changes that will mix up your routine.
5 Healthier Date Night Ideas
Paul and I are like a lot of couples. Our relationship routine has a cycle. We plan a fantastic evening and have a great time. It goes on for a few weeks then things sort of fizzle out. Then one of us realizes it’s been ages since we did anything interesting and the cycle starts over.
Recently I realized why it happens. A romantic rut, better known as ‘the same boring old thing’ sucks us in. We lose interest, not in each other, but in our various date night activities. We end up at the same places, with the same people, doing the same things. Yes, we seriously lack imagination. Then I figured out we don’t need to change things up too much. These five Healthier Date Night Ideas are a decent nudge for couples who need a gentle remind to try something new!
1. Break Up with Your Remote
We understand the desire to crash on the couch with your BSOF (best significant other forever) at the end of a busy day. Seriously folks, we are streaming GoT for the fourth time! At some time though Netflix and chill starts to dull a little bit. You end up staying up too late, and we won’t mention the unhealthy snacks.
Next time skip the Cheeto hangover in favor of something active. It could be a walk around a local park, something Paul and I have been doing for day dates, bowling, dancing, or whatever gets your blood flowing. Home-bodies there is nothing wrong with an 80’s epic dance off in your living room! If you absolutely can’t stop streaming, pause after each episode for a 10 minute walk around the neighborhood. It’s a great time to dissect the storyline.
2. Step Away from the Nachos
Whether you are going out or staying, plenty of us use a night out as an excuse to indulge. Or even worse, over indulge. We are notorious for hitting up happy hour and calling it date night. Last time I checked queso, chicken wings, bottom less chips, and deep-fried everything are not the four food groups.
Are cheeseburgers your thing? Try out a vegetarian restaurant instead. Always wanted to try authentic pho but need a nudge? How about packing a starlit picnic? We like to make simple recipes like my Easy 20 Minute Spicy Rotisserie Chicken Soup while we listen to music and AVOID OUR PHONES!
3. Embrace Mocktails
Speaking of over-indulging. I know my tag line is ‘It’s always Thyme for Cocktails’, but the thing is – sometimes it’s not time. There are plenty of reasons to occasionally skip the booze in favor of a healthier drink option. Paul and I like to spend a few weeks dry each year, especially right before the holidays.
These days we are swapping the wine for Welch’s 100% Juice with Coconut Water. It has all the added benefits of coconut water and naturally 30% less sugar. I love that they don’t add any sweeteners or sugar, and each serving is only 100 calories! Hit up your local Target where you can choose between White Grape Mango and Tropical Berry Grape.
4. Indulge in Self-Care
All couples need a little self-care folks. We spend so much time on the go, yet when we get physical downtime there is still the mental overload to contend with. Part of really connecting as a couple is getting out of your individual heads and on the same page. Many self-care activities like meditation, massage, and yoga can be surprisingly intimate for couples! Take a class together, spring for a private session, or download any number apps to help with these soothing practices.
I am not ashamed to admit my man likes a good at-home spa night! We play with face masks, he brushes my hair, and we dabble with concoctions like my Cucumber Ginger Whipped Body Butter. The experience can be silly or sexy or both!
5. Strain Your Brain
This is probably our favorite of all the Healthier Date Night Ideas! Where we put down our phones and step away from the hectic stress brought on by our electronic leashes. This is where we engage our gray matter with mental acrobatic feats.
Sometimes we battle it out over a game of Scrabble while snacking on my Salted Chipotle Caramel Corn. Other times we team up against friends in order to dominate a friendly game of trivia. One of these days we want to try one of those interactive escape adventures!
