Goodbyes are never easy, even when the future holds wonderful things. A Letter To My Son is everything I couldn’t say to my son as he begins his life journey.
We are both beginning a new journey, separate from the life we loved together. We will always be close but it’s time for each of us to take a separate fork in the road!
A Letter To My Son
This morning I woke with tears staining my pillow. My dreams a jumbled mess of epic proportions. I checked on you last night as many times as the first night I brought you home.
For 19 years you have been more than my son. You have been my shadow. A constant companion crowding my thoughts, heart and personal space.
We are partners in crime; adventurers seeking out new experiences. Many times you were my calm away from a stormy life.
You are proof that everything happens for a reason.
We have been through so many firsts together. Firsts for both of us. Scary, exhilarating, amazing firsts.
And now we have a new first to tackle.
We both know you have the strength and skills to blow this next chapter out of the water! All those times you weren’t afraid to stand up to me will come in handy. Just remember your delivery. Be kind. Be respectful. But be firm in your convictions.
Not everyone will have patience with you. Which means be extra patient with them.
You aren’t always right no matter how badly you want to be. But you can always be open to learning new things.
You are going to make so many mistakes it’ll feel like the world is out to get you. I promise that feeling will pass.
A true leader knows when to trust his instincts and when to trust the wisdom of others. Stand strong next to those around you.
When in doubt keep your mouth shut, and your eyes and ears open.
Remember not to make promises you can’t keep. That it’s okay to admit you are wrong. And no means NO!
Please always respect other’s personal boundaries. Physical and emotional.
People will give me credit for your future success. Saying you are a good man because I raised you right. I say you are good man because that’s just who you are.
These next steps are up to you. I’ve always taught you to make good choices rather than tell you what to do. Hopefully that advice will serve you well.
Now go be the awesome person you are and kick some ass. I’ll be over here try to figure out my next adventure if you need me.
The kid is now on his way to basic training and my days are suddenly less full. It is an exhilarating feeling knowing he is starting such an exciting chapter in life.
And to be honest I am looking forward to being my own person just a little bit more than I was before. Stay tuned for changes to the blog as I learn to cook for 2, and have the freedom to get a little more creative in the casa kitchen!
